Sporting rifle club
The club has once again enjoyed a
successful year, despite getting off to a
slow start due to poor weather conditions.
Many of our new members had never
shot before and were enthusiastic to try
their hand at the sport of target shooting.
However, our main focus once again has
been on deer stalking and associated
skills, with several members going on to
undertake their DSC level 1 qualifications
with success. Members have also had
the opportunity to attend talks by both
the British Deer Society and the British
Association for Shooting and Conservation.

Snow sports
Back in November 2015, the snow
sports committee took the ski team to
compete at the British University Dryslope
Championships in Edinburgh, which was
a truly memorable occasion. We entered
two teams into the dual slalom competition,
as well as entering Sam Guinness, Hugo
Pearson-Wood, and Sam Head into
the freestyle Big Air. Although we didn’t
make the podiums, the commentator
found it comical that the RAU team
competed in John Deere overalls! The
rest of the year has been full-on for the
committee, organising the Easter trip to
Alpe d’Huez, which was a huge success.

Water sports
We have successfully provided water based
activities for all students, from freshers to
postgraduates, offering something different
to do on a Wednesday afternoon. Having
built a strong relationship with South
Cerney Outdoors, we’re now able to hire
equipment at a reduced rate. Funding
gained from Sportivate allowed seven
students to complete their RYA Start
Windsurfing course. Qualifications are
essential in these sports and it’s great to
provide the opportunity for students to gain
them. Participation has grown from last
year and we expect it to be even greater as
we move forward in to the summer months.
