Equine students launched the ‘Crack the
Hat’ riding safety campaign in January
2016, which received national coverage in
Horse and Hound
and
Eventing Worldwide
,
and on BBC Radio Gloucestershire.
The ‘Crack the Hat’ campaign, which aimed
to raise awareness of the importance of
wearing a riding hat with the correct safety
standards, was created by Alicia Lee, Grace
Pugh, Megan Duffield, Anneli Ives, and
Cordelia Marshall as a coursework project
for one of their modules. The hard-hitting
slogan ‘Crack your hat, not your head’
emphasised their campaign message.
The campaign encouraged people to get
involved by filming themselves cracking
an egg on their head, and then donating
to the Injured Jockeys Fund. These
videos were then shared to the official
‘Crack the Hat’ social media pages, to
encourage more people to take part.
Alicia Lee said: “We hope that through
the power of social media, we will raise
awareness of riding hat safety standards,
and encourage people to take part in the
challenge. We hope to raise money for the
Injured Jockeys Fund, a very important
charity within the equine sector.”

RAG Week (Raise and Give) is a tradition
at the RAU, which gives students the
opportunity to come together and raise
money for some fantastic charities.
In February 2016, students took part in
a number of activities, including a charity
auction, rugby match, games night, clay
pigeon shoot, a gala dinner, and tractor
pull. The profits from these events will
go to three worthwhile charities selected
by the RAG team; SSAFA, Cotswold
Volunteers, and Young Epilepsy.
While the funds are still coming in,
we’d like to say a massive thank you
to everyone involved.
Raising and
Giving 2016
“The RAU has become well known
for its RAG fundraising, and it’s
certainly a huge highlight in the
year for many students. We are
very proud to be able to support
so many incredible charities with
increasingly creative and diverse
ideas. On behalf of myself and the
RAG team, I would like to thank
everyone who supported our 2016
RAG fundraising.”
